This is primarily the case for the agricultural sector, which accounts for around 70% of the world&#8217;s total water withdrawals, 11% of the land and represents 30% of the total energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Water Observatory has developed a wide range of studies and activities related to the water footprint and environmental sustainability of food consumption and agricultural production. The results are reflected in 8 monographs of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionbotin.org\/observatory-area\/virtual-water-papers-pav.html\">Virtual Water Paper (PAV) series<\/a>&nbsp;and the book &#8220;<em>Water footprint and virtual water trade in Spain: Policy Implications<\/em>&#8220;, the interdisciplinary monograph&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionbotin.org\/89dguuytdfr276ed_uploads\/Observatorio%20Tendencias\/PUBLICACIONES\/huella_hidrica_paginas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;<em>Water footprint and virtual water in Cantabria<\/em>&#8220;<\/a>&nbsp;jointly developed with Aqualia and the Government of Cantabria, and in the doctoral theses on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/oa.upm.es\/32830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;<em>Implications of agricultural production, policy and land use changes on water resource assessment<\/em>&#8216;<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/oa.upm.es\/48204\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;<em>Influence of external drivers on water use efficiency and sustainability in agricultural production<\/em>&#8216;<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A distinctive feature of the Water Observatory work is that apart from analysing the &#8220;classic&#8221; water footprint (i.e. uses of water), it incorporates other economic, social and environmental indicators, which reinforce the study to achieve a deeper analysis, also called the &#8220;extended&#8221; water footprint. In all these studies, the economic water productivity has been considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionbotin.org\/observatorio-contenidos\/cursos-del-observatorio-del-agua.html\">Classroom and online water footprint courses<\/a>&nbsp;are organized in coordination with the CEIGRAM, Water Footprint Network and more recently with FCIHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These topics have also been addressed in several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionbotin.org\/en\/programmes\/water-observatory\/national-seminars\/\">national<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionbotin.org\/en\/programmes\/water-observatory\/international-seminars\/\">international seminars<\/a>. The last national seminar on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionbotin.org\/89dguuytdfr276ed_uploads\/Observatorio%20Tendencias\/Sem%20NACIONALES\/Programa_Seminario_Indicadores_Impacto.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;<em>Indicators of environmental impacts of food products&#8221;<\/em><\/a>deserves special attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, the Water Observatory research has focused on sustainable consumption and production patterns through the water footprint of consumption analysis, for example, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionbotin.org\/89dguuytdfr276ed_uploads\/Observatorio%20Tendencias\/PUBLICACIONES\/Dieta%20Mediterranea%20frente%20a%20Americana.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;<em>Water footprint of the Mediterranean and North American diets<\/em>&#8216;<\/a>&nbsp;and food waste.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sustainable consumption and production is one of the main challenges for humanity and an important part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":430,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-692","programas","type-programas","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
